With the flurry of activity, I neglected to post the…flurry of activity!
A few items to mention in chronological order.
- Documentation of the Spheres, scapes and the grain of formative hauntings exhibition at Good Grief back in July can now be seen here.
- Documentation of the Secular Ritual (selfie) exhibition at Sawtooth back in Sept/Oct can now be seen here.
- A ‘clip’ was made for ‘DISCOTWANG3’, a track from No(n)Sense. It can be seen here.
- Over 5 non-consecutive days during November and December, I undertook a RAWspace Residency at the Theatre Royal in Hobart/Nipaluna.
This was to develop a new sound and performative installation work called Ghost Applause, culminating in a couple of test showings.
Pretty successful. We will see where it goes in the future.
- I was included in the great project from Blindside ARI in Melbourne/Naarm - B-Side Radio, a collection or sound programs, broadcast between 21 November and 13 December. Thankfully they have archived it and it all can be heard at: https://soundcloud.com/blindsideradio
I’m in amazing company and really appreciate the inclusion. For those interested, my piece Journey Through The Waterfall is included in ‘Sound - Track’ ep. 1.

Matt Warren - One Minute’s Silence
A new collection of noise works, recorded over the last 4 years, release on the wonderful ’Noise In Opposition’ label with artwork by Mark Stone. Released this Friday, 3rd of November via Bandcamp.
“After an extended break in transmission, Noise In Opposition returns with an exclusive release from long-term friend & collaborator, multimedia artist and musician Matt Warren [mumble(speak), The Non-Compliant Airmen, Machines Of Indeterminate Origin, and many more]. One Minute's Silence was recorded in snatched moments over the space of 4 years from 2018 to 2022, during which a great deal of stuff happened, much of which fed into Matt's work. Here are twenty sixty-second miniatures constructed from processed recordings and synth noises, created by an experienced and thoughtful artist.”

’Hauntology at 576 Lines (and some at 480 lines)’ at “Small File Media Retrospective", Cinematheque, Vancouver, Canada.
September 27 (Wednesday), October 19 (Thursday)
“Embracing aging technology is like loving an old pet”.
By immersing us in the tactile beauty of analogue recordings, these films invite us to revisit obsolete filming technologies and explore their creative potential.
Hauntology at 576 Lines (and some at 480 lines) - Australia 2020 | Matt Warren | 5 min. | 4.9 MB
"While revisiting his artistic past on a VHS tape, Warren is haunted by the immanent presence of analogue noise’s flickering entities."
"Small-file media began as a practice of raising awareness about the high carbon footprint of streaming media and has since become an entirely new art form. This radical aesthetic practice challenges the prevailing desire for high-definition media and cinematic grandeur; it also explores the unknown, pixel by pixel, and propels the formation of imaginary realities and alternate cosmic outlooks. A prelude to the upcoming 2023 Small-File Media Festival, this retrospective explores the affective power of experimental ecomedia through a curated selection of green and artful small films. Programs will run 15 minutes before the first regular evening screening each night, admission is included.

Live gig(s)
I was due to appear beneath the Turrell space at MONA during Dark Mofo with a set of new material on June 17. Unfortunately the weather throughout greater Hobart made that impossible, with the very real threat that my gear would be blown away. I have been offered a replacement gig (with a second set as well, 2 x 45 mins) on Saturday 22 of July, 2:00-4:00pm on the Lawns, MONA, Berriedale, Tasmania. Those in and around Hobart, come and have a listen to some exploratory, psych, electro-acoustic and controlled chaos drone works. https://mona.net.au/stuff-to-do/music-at-mona

I've been working on this project for the last couple of months, a commissioned sound design work called 'Letter To Mother' for the 2023 Echo Festival, presented in the 'Womb Room' Yurt on site. Internal drones, foley for invisible film, spoken word, ticks a few boxes for me. Hope those who attend enjoy it.
'Letter to Mother' –- is a series of recorded written letters read aloud by their writer. These letters will speak to parent, Mother Nature, creator. Audiences can engage by listening to the recordings via headsets in the Womb Room at ECHO, a gentle pink space dedicated to the senses of sound, touch and scent.

The following is playlist of music I listened to and absorbed in 2022, that helped keep me sane in a strange, busy and productive year full of activities, joy and sadness. A large chunk of this was newly released in 2022, some were reissues of older favourites that I picked up and a few were older pieces, but only recently discovered.

Nocturne: Sonic Migrations
gets another iteration.
What a nice way to round out the year. Back in February my collaboration with Sally McIntyre, Dani Kirby and Eliza Burke was presented (after a long gestation and a number of delays) at the Waterside Pavilion, nipaluna/Hobart. Now, the data that started in the water, then taken to the land, is now broadcast back into water. The wonderful Radio Amnion project is broadcasting our piece in it’s entirety online and into the waters of the Cascadia Basin via a submerged neutrino telescope. From the 8th to the 10th of December 2022.
Go have a listen: https://radioamnion.net/
Nocturne: Sonic Migrations was performed on the nipaluna/Hobart waterfront, lutruwita/Tasmania, on February 18, 2022. It was assisted through Arts Tasmania with support from Constance ARI and The City of Hobart’s Creative Hobart. Thanks to Ivan Johnson for recording this event. Thanks also to Tricky Walsh, Mary Scott, Lucienne Rickard, David Patman, Annalise Rees and Rona Hollingsworth for sharing their thoughts and voices for this project.

And now for something completely different...
My rock band/duo Machines Of Indeterminate Origin releases a new downloadable single.
https://moio.bandcamp.com/album/this-ship-rights-itself-reckless
Machines have been quiet for a while, but have been paying attention and occasionally working behind the scenes. We now offer a new original song; ‘This Ship Rights Itself’, a piece of noisy power pop informed by post-punk Oz Rock, along with our sludgy cover/arrangement of Australian Crawl's ‘Reckless’. We have sat on these tracks for a while, but feel like this is the time.
It is 2022 and yet we still see the world indulges in senseless violence, be it military action of one country against another or gun violence from within. M010 are making this two track download available, with all proceeds going to support Ukranian refugees and also Amnesty International’s continued push for better gun laws internationally, especially what has happened (again) in the USA.
https://www.unrefugees.org.au/emergency-response/ukraine-emergency/
https://www.amnesty.org/en/what-we-do/arms-control/gun-violence/
This download is setup as ‘pay as you like’, so consider what you would like to give to these charities, all proceeds, split evenly, go to them.
Thank you, Matt on behalf of

GLOSSOLALIA
Happy to announce ‘Glossolalia’; a two-part exhibition that’s been on the cards for a while and is now thankfully coming to fruition. It’s been developed by the Plimsoll Gallery and opens on Friday 6th of May and will run to 25th of June. There are more details below and on the Plimsoll website of what the show is about and what it contains, but it will also feature some further public program elements including an artist/curator talk and later in the exhibition’s run, a performance by Gail Priest and myself. We are grateful for the inclusion in the Dark Mofo 2022 festival program and for their support with the performance.
“Glossolalia (the phenomenon of apparently speaking in an unknown language) is a two-part exhibition that features four national art practitioners, each creating a distinctive, yet harmonic experience through time-based media.
Glossolalia (pt. 1) is a selection of seven artworks by leading Tasmanian time-based media artist Matt Warren. Curated by Colin Langridge part 1 will explore conceptual and aesthetic threads of connection between Matt’s earlier explorations in video and sound, and more contemporary technology.
Glossolalia (pt. 2) is a gathering of three artists who play with the “hidden” or “obscured” in their work, the exposure of an occult of images and sound. Curated by Matt Warren, part 2 features the work of Gail Priest, Sean Bacon and Abbie Calvert.”
Curated by Dr Colin Langridge and Dr Matt Warren.

Happy new year.
It’s become a bit a cliche but we live in strange times. I begin this post with that almost as a caveat, because it seems now that almost everything is “subject to change”. I have thus far been pretty lucky with being able to avoid the C word since the powers that be “let it rip”, even a little niggling concern came back negative, but we citizens must remain vigilant as our elected leaders…well lets just leave it there…
So in the event everything goes to plan, 2022 is looking pretty busy so far.
First up, the good folk(s) at Frustration Jazz will be reissuing a live recording of Scot Cotterell and myself under the moniker of DUO performing at Devonport Regional Gallery back in 2011 on limited edition CD and download. It is due sometime in February. Stay tuned.

Just A Mirage
The day before the border opens, Tasmanian artist Matt Warren releases a new album "Just A Mirage" as a download and limited edition hand numbered CD. This album was produced during the atmosphere of uncertainty bought on by the pandemic and the parallels the artist sees with his own childhood games of being the last person left on an abandoned earth.
Aural and visual phenomena were inspired by the unusual psychological states some of us were in during the lockdowns or restrictions. One sometimes wondered “Did I see someone when there should be no-one around?” One was simultaneously missing human connection, whilst fearful of getting too close to others. This album expresses the artist’s musings during this time, informed by the loss of a loved one, the dichotomy of the joy of isolation, a quieter world and more recently, a concern that we all may be diving back in too fast.
These ideas are filtered through memories of childhood play of imagining the world has been abandoned by everyone, but somehow one remained. When the impression of another human or movement in the distance was apparently seen, one told oneself “don’t worry, it’s just a mirage”. Those conceptual imaginings were informed by fictional works such as “Logan’s Run” and “The Last Man On Earth”. At certain moments during 2020 and 2021, they seemed prophetic.
The album is a collection of 8 experimental pieces incorporating drones, electro-acoustic explorations, field recordings and spoken word, some of which are courtesy of special guest artists via file sharing. It is released in conjunction with a video piece “A Mirage” which can be seen on release day via Vimeo: https://vimeo.com/649680080/

As part of ‘Moon Venture’ on Thursday November the 18th, I’ll be revealing some things, slightly outside my norm at Moon Shed in Moonah. It will be a drawing series with sound and some video objects. Come and see, hear, experience.

As you may or may not know, I’m fortunate to be working with curator Eliza Burke, sound artist Sally Ann McIntyre and vocalist Dani Kirby on a project
called “Nocturne: Sonic Migrations”. It will be a live performed soundscape, utilising voice samples from interviewees, recordings of sea life and sub-marine activity and sung vocals and is based around the ideas of whale-song, interspecies communication, long distance communication and sleep cycles. It is to be presented by Constance ARI in conjunction with the Hobart City Council. It was due to be performed on the 18th of July as part of World Listening Day, but as the Covid-19 situation continues, certain limitations of the crew getting together fully, necessitated that we postpone this project. We have since been able to have our first get together/workshop and we are pretty happy with the results so far. We will update with a confirmed new date for the performance when it’s available.

Some new writing.
A little behind on reporting this, but I recently had the honour of writing some liner notes for a new release by one of my favourite artists Mick Harris. He released “Drones, Tones, Drifts and Feedbacks part 1” back on 7th of May and is available as a download via his Bandcamp page. Go immerse yourself and read my notes too!

Sound works in Echo
Pleased to announce I am creating some sound pieces for this late-March festival, under the “Gathering of the Clans” umbrella. One piece will contain geological spoken word from the awesome Keith Corbett amongst electro acoustic composition. The other, a tonal and atmospheric soundscape within an immersive environment.
